More Description

A modern day interpretation of The Parable of The Ten Virgins as found in Matthew, Chapter 25:1-13. It portrays distractions that can prevent us from filling our lamps with the oil of conversion: Judging, Noise, Extreme, Materialism, and Pride. It also portrays values young women are taught through the Gospel of Jesus Christ that help us carefully fill our lamps drop by drop: Divine Nature, Individual Worth and Knowledge, Good works, Choice and Accountability, Integrity, Faith & Virtue.

As daughters of Heavenly Father we are meant to shine. We are not ordinary. We are brilliant, beautiful and powerful. May this artwork be a reminder of the distractions and values of our time and remind us that today is the day to prepare.

“Wherefore, be faithful, praying always, having your lamps trimmed and burning, and oil with you, that you may be ready at the coming of the Bridegroom.” (D&C 33:17) Choose You This Day.

“Choose You This Day,” a modern day interpretation of the Ten Virgins by Megan Warner Taylor. Photographed by Don Wilhelmsen.

#1, The Ten

#2, Judging

Judging has no patience for imperfections in others.
She feels superior.  She gossips, ignores, ridicules, and takes pleasure in others’ weaknesses.  She is easily offended.  On the outside she looks the part, but on the inside her heart is hard.  Mother
Teresa said, “If you judge people you have no time to  love them.”

Matthew 7:2  “For what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.”

#3, Noise

Noise is too connected to things of the world.

Distractions drown out the whisperings of the still small voice.  She is in constant search of fun and is oblivious to wasted hours.  She accomplishes nothing of substance or worth.  She wears watches, but time is unimportant to her.  Her belts symbolize Satan’s grasp; she is unaware of his subtle power.    Her hair and makeup represent a life in chaos.

1 Nephi 17:45  “Ye have heard his voice... and he hath spoken unto you in the still small voice, but ye were past feeling, that ye could not feel his words.”

#4, Extreme

Extreme wanders down dangerous paths.

Her blue lips symbolize a cold heart. She is past feeling. She embraces addiction of the body and mind and feels compelled to invited others to join her. She knowingly chooses destructive behavior with no care for the consequences. The spirit has left her and she has a diminished conscience of the chains that bind her.

Ephesians 6:11  “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”

For more information, please click on the side link labelled, "Extreme".

#5, Materialism

Materialism seeks after wealth and luxury.
Her heart is filled with the love of money and the need of possessions.  These make her who she is and bring her a false sense of worldly security.  Without them she feels of little worth.  Living beyond her means, she can never have enough.  She has chosen worldly abundance over spiritual living.

Matthew 6:21  “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

#6, Pride

Pride is front and center.
She wants others to look on her with envy though she is jealous and envious of those around her.  C.S. Lewis said, “Pride gets no pleasure out of having something, only out of having more of it than the next man....  It is the comparison that makes you proud: the pleasure of being above the rest.  Once the element of competition has gone, pride has gone.”  She sees pride in others, but not in herself.  She gets bored easily and chooses not to associate with those she considers beneath her. She is dependent on the world  to discern her value.
Proverbs 16:18  “Pride goeth before destruction.”

#7, Divine Nature

Divine Nature, Individual Worth and Knowledge works hard to develop her God-given gifts.
She knows who she is.  She studies the scriptures.  She knows the attributes of Christ and is trying to be like Him.  As her individual faith grows through obedience, her gifts also grow through their exercise and use.  She relies on the Lord and He enlarges her talents and blesses the lives of those around her.
3 Nephi 27:27  “...therefore, what manner of men ought ye to be?
Verily I say unto you, even as I am.”

#8, Good Works

Good Works Sparkles.
She is a woman of Godly walk and countenance.  She radiates the pure love of Christ.  She recognizes the divine potential in others.  She is always serving.  Happiness is hers.
1 Corinthians 13  “Charity, a pure love, excels and exceeds almost all else.”

#9, Choice and Accountability

Choice and Accountability is filled with gratitude and love for her Savior.
Like the Lamanites of old, she has experienced a mighty change of heart and has forsaken all her sins to know Him.  She is confident in and knows the power of the atonement.  She seeks after that which draws her closer to the Savior.
Alma 5:13  ...”a mighty change was also wrought in their hearts, and they humbled themselves and put their trust in the true and living God.  And behold, they were faithful until the end...”

#10, Integrity

Integrity believes in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
She is confident in sharing her beliefs with others.  She has great hope for the future.  As a daughter of God, she stands as a witness of God at all times and in all places.

D&C 115:5  “Arise and shine forth, that thy light may be a standard for the nations.”

#11, Faith and Virtue

Faith and Virtue clothes herself in white, symbolizing purity.
Her shoes are removed; she stands in holy places.  Her braided hair represents her past, present, and future being connected.  She sits upon a pillar, the cornerstone and foundation of her faith, the Savior’s teachings, and that of his servants.  The key around her neck represents the restored priesthood keys that bind her family together for eternity.  Her lamp of testimony is filled drop by drop with the oil of conversion.  Gazing toward her Heavenly Father, she is calm in a world of confusion and turmoil.  She regularly attends the temple.  As a daughter of God, her beauty radiates from living a virtuous and chaste life.
Proverbs 31:10  “Who can find a virtuous woman?  for her price is far above rubies.”
